Set Dressing Course

Have that decorating flair? Love to get your hands dirty with paint or dirt? Learn how to successfully source dressing and make the right creative choices. Learn to project manage your pre-production timeline and find out more about different kinds of materials and tools to use in your craft.

Props Master Course
CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

To be a good Props Master you should have a series of specialised skill sets. This includes building up contacts to unusual things that you will need to use as props on your shoot. Learn how you take the list from your script breakdown to realisation, within budget, and around an erratic shooting schedule. Find out how to manage your props and props team on set, and basically what everything props entail.

This course will teach you what to expect of a job on a film set. You will learn all your duties, and get an insight of how to execute them. Everything from your own script breakdown, prepping your props for the day to tools usage and stand by delivery.

The Props Master Course


This course ideally completes in 3 WEEKS but is available for 5 WEEKS from time of payment.
There are 3 Intensive Lessons. 1 Lesson per week

Breakdowns and Planning in
Pre-Production

In this lesson you will learn how to break down a script and make workable lists. Learn the advantages of being well prepared for a Pre-Production meeting.
Then you will be shown how to choose the right props and apply your clever creative flair.

Sourcing Props, Picture Vehicles and Armoury

In this Lesson you will learn how to organise your prep time in order to start sourcing the props effectively.
You will get to know the sourcing process and what your best avenues of executing your duties will be. Get to know how to find cars for your shoot, and understand the rules and laws of using guns in a drama.

On Set Prop Mastering and The Standby Crew

In this lesson we cover the role of the Props master on set. You will learn all about the Props Store and Set Truck/Van, and how to pack them. Find out how to handle food stuff and drinks in scenes, as well as the managing of the Standby Crew.

Art Direction Course

We highly advise that this course is for
Previously Experienced Art Department Crew or previous
Art Department Course Students. You may not receive your desired course ACCREDITATION if no previous experience.

This course ideally completes in 6 WEEKS but is available for 10 WEEKS from time of payment.

How to Create a
Look and Feel

At the start of any shoot, the Art Director lays down a look and feel of a shoot. The outcome of this exercise, in conjunction with the Director’s creative vision, forms the template of everything you choose and create for your shoot.

Learn to Delegate Your Department

The Art Department operates over a few areas in a film production. It takes skill and patience to make sure all your crew is meeting the deadlines, and all within your creative vision and your budget. Learn how to keep them motivated and how to ensure they deliver.

Minor Set Construction

Even if you are not the Set Designer, as an Art Director you will always encounter spaces that need some construction of a kind. We will get you familiar with the most common types of minor set construction, your carpentry team and the tools necessary to make it happen.

All About Managing Your Budget

Knowing how budgets work, how Line Producers think, and how to get the most out of it is yet another skill to develop. We cover the essentials on avoiding the most common pitfalls, planning expenses according to budget lines and knowing the costs of things.

Choosing and Using Locations as Your Canvas

When choosing Locations for a shoot, a Producer needs all the input from the Art Director as possible. This assist in the production making the right decisions for the optimum use of budget, logistics and general Production Value. Learn what mistakes to avoid, and how to use your locations as the ultimate Art Direction tool for the look and feel of your shoot.

On Set Art Direction

All the Art Direction in the world is not worth anything if it does not translate to what happens in front of camera! Learn to work closely with the Director of Photography (DOP), the Gaffer (Lighting HOD) and the 1st AD (First assistant director), as well as the Locations manager. These people are your key comrades on set, and together you all make the magic happen.

Your role and duties as the Art Standby on Set

On set, the machine of film making is in its peak form of executing all the preparations of the shoot. What happens in front of the camera when it is rolling, is what it is all about. Learn what you are supposed to do when a scene is being rehearsed. Get taught the set discipline of a standby and learn the principles of resetting scenes between takes.

Learn the tricks of the trade and know what tools to use

In this lesson we will cover numerous typical shooting scenarios where your craftiness as a props standby will come into play. You will be showed how to fix these problems, using specific tools and materials. You will learn what your ideal standby kit should have and how to use each tool.

Represent the Art Department on set and streamline your workflow.

Here you will learn about your role at the VT monitor, and how to maintain the artistic integrity of the look and feel of the production design. Learn the ‘leap frog’ method of preparing for each scene and shot during shooting.
